Blackskull Orange and Blue Report

Updated 09 February 2010 05:19:34 PM by Simon.

Blackskull held their second annual parade since reforming in Donaghcloney on Saturday 30th June.

With another parade on in Tandragee, some bands were doing it first before arriving in Donaghcloney. There were also other bands who were out during the day in Bangor for the Junior Orange parade so it was already their second parade of the day as well.

Blackskull’s parade was one of my favourites in 2008. Although it was helped by the weather I thought that the atmosphere of the parade was excellent with the locals out in their gardens to support the first parade in the village in quite a few years. This year’s parade was much of the same with the great weather continuing from Friday evening and a good crowd out to watch the bands with a relaxed atmosphere.

We had thought that our own attendance would be considerably lower than Friday night with some members away to a wedding and others unable to attend due to other commitments. However we were more than pleased when we formed up to see 5 in the colour party, 2 drum majors, 15 drummers, 2 bass drummers and 28 flutes lined up.

We started the parade on one of our older tunes “Raiders” from the Indiana Jones films. Coming through the village we mixed the tunes between some of our new ones such as Royal Flush, Silver Hill with older tunes such as Renegades, Dollys Brae and Wee 6/8.

Once again our new drum major Ryan was in fine form with the height of his throws getting higher week by week. Our band master remarked a few weeks back that he felt that Ryan maybe needed a longer band pole so that he could get more spin and height on the pole when on parade. Hopefully he can get this sorted so we can see him go that bit higher in the coming weeks.

In the end it was to be another good night for the bass drummers with the band picking up Bass Drum for the second night in succession. We also managed to win Blood & Thunder for the second year in a row which pleased the band as we felt that it was another good performance from us.

Congratulations to Blackskull on organising another successful parade and we’ll look forward to going to Donaghcloney again next year.
